Here you'll find my complete recipe and instructions to bake this out-of-this-world candy lover's birthday cake! A perfect dark chocolate cake with fluffy buttercream and colorful drip covered with a forest of lollipops.
I was looking through my post drafts the other day and saw this cake. I thought, "Surely this draft is a duplicate. I know I posted this like 2 years ago."
Nope, never hit publish. And I suppose it's not too surprising seeing as how the birthday party I made this for doubled as our going away party right before we moved across the country after which my body promptly decided to surprise me with a lovely year of stage 3 cancer.
But, here I am, 2 years later and 1 year cancer free(!!), finally ready to tell you all about this cake. It's definitely my favorite birthday cake I've made to date.
When I asked my almost 5-year-old what theme he wanted for his birthday cake, I thought maybe he would say trucks or dinosaurs, but nope. CANDY. Well, he has not changed a bit in the two years since I made this and now at 7 years old he's my only child who has had any cavities to date.
Maybe that's not the best advertisement for this cake...
Uh... brush your teeth after you eat this!
I think we had about 8 adults and 28ish kids at this party and this cake served everyone generously.
I loved the reaction to the cake. He was "wheezing" his cake excessively, which is a sure sign of success for me. That's what he calls his excited stimming thing he does with his hands (check out the video below to see him in action). Anybody else's kids do this??
What you will need to make this cake:
12 oz. melting chocolate (color of choice)Toothpicks
1 Large Lollipop (they have big really big ones at The Dollar Tree, but ours had just gone out of business so I got this one at a local candy store!)
